With the inauguration of the 34th National Standing Committee, (NSC) on the evaluation of foreign qualifications, it is now clear that the Federal Government will no longer tolerate the operations of illegal satellite campuses and affiliations with foreign unaccredited universities, implying that the days of "Boys Quarter" degrees are over and for good.   The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, yesterday said the Federal Government was addressing the strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities holistically to ensure that all other unions in the university system were carried along. Ngige said this while defending the budget of his ministry before the Senate Committee on Labour and Employment. Ngige, according to a statement by his media aide, Emmanuel Nzomiwu, responding to the concerns raised by the committee on the prolonged ASUU strike. The minister said: “Out of the eight demands of ASUU, the government has solved five. We have made N50 billion available.   The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, has resumed after his reinstatement by President Muhammadu Buhari. Ogundipe was earlier asked to ‘step aside’ by the Visitor of the university pending the outcome of an investigation over allegations of infractions and gross misconduct. When Ogundipe resumed on Thursday, he was received by members of staff of UNILAG, including top management personnel, at the Senate Building foyer. He urged the workers to allow peace to reign in the institution. “Let us all be united. It is not about the academic or non-academic staff; it is about UNILAG. Let us all work together and allow peace in this institution,” added.   The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ebonyi State University chapter, and the management of the university are currently at loggerheads over resumption plans. Recall that the management of the university had uploaded a memo on its Facebook page dated November 9 to announce the institution’s 2020 matriculation slated for Saturday, November 14. “This is to inform the General Public, Parents and Guardians as well as all candidates who have been offered admission by Ebonyi State University, that the 2019/2020 Matriculation Ceremony of the Institution will now finally hold as follows,” the memo reads. The memo, which was signed by the registrar of the school, Bibian Nwoku, explained that all students are expected to pay their school fees as required by the university, if they had not done so. “The candidates are to collect the necessary Matriculation materials from their various Faculty Officers,” the memo reads.
